Mann's new book
On October 9, 2004, Robert Mann's new book, "One Big Fat Liar" came out. Mann was never known for his literary taste. best-known work, "The Hockey Stick & The Climate Wars," was a propaganda piece against anyone who questioned the hockey stick. Not that there wasn't any such evidence about the hockey stick, of course. This book, however, is not a propaganda piece. As Mann wrote, "This book is, first and foremost, a historical one -- story of a conspiracy by two the world's greatest, well-known and most distinguished scientists, one a pioneer in the development of computer models for the atmosphere, other a world-leading expert on the global climate." A historian should take care never to use the word "Conspiracy." A historian should not have to be told that "conspiracy" implies a criminal enterprise. The word has a distinctly Nazi connotation, so it should not be ever used by an author of authoritative text to describe such a straightforward and reasonable story. The only problem here is that Mann had used the word in "The Hockey Stick," passing: "One of the most celebrated scientists 20th century," he wrote, "predicted that rising levels of carbon dioxide would lead to global cooling in the first part of this century....The hockey stick, so hailed by such scientists as John Tyndall, was the greatest scientific accomplishment of last fifty years. It established a new record." Mann would make this mistake in "The Hockey Stick." He would use "Hockey Stick" instead of "Hail" to refer the hockey stick. We should be more careful to avoid repeating these mistakes.
